Look After Your Mental Health This Christmas

I’d say Christmas is one of the toughest times of year when it comes to maintaining a healthy mental state. Not only does it land in the season of SAD syndrome it also leaves people thinking more about lost loved ones and the biggest trigger of depression, financial worries.

Whether we care to admit it or not, Christmas is materialised so much by everyone around us, we all sit and say things like christmas is about being with families and spending time with the people we care about the most, but in reality the moment you mention maybe giving gifts a miss, it’s almost impossible to comprehend.

To me, when I say that I really don’t care about the gift’s I genuinely mean it. I know just how stressful it can be and I’ve also seen how people react when they’ve not received as much as they’d have liked to, let alone nothing at all and it’s really sad to see that when they claimed that Christmas wasn’t about gifts. (It happens a lot!)

When it comes to your mental health, it’s important to be as strong as you can, stick to your guns and stay true to what you know is right for you. Here are just 3 simple things to think about when keeping your mind cloud free.

  • DON’T DWELL ON MONEY: Christmas as much as it’s depicted to be all about giving and receiving gifts and the adverts on the TV and in the supermarkets try to make you spend ££ on gifts, the reality of it is, the best gift you could give someone is a happy and healthy you, but if you wanted to go that extra mile, create something with your own hands. Get crafty, even if it’s just a hand written letter to someone. It’s the thought that counts.
  • DON’T SPEND TIME WITH PEOPLE WHO PUT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH AT RISK: This is quite a big one and admittedly can be a really tricky one to get out of, especially when it comes to family but we all have those family members that make us question ourselves, our abilities and like to make us feel a little less important than anyone else. They might make comments about you, the way you are or the way you look and tell you to put that diet on your resolution list for the new year. Even the subtle digs they throw at you can throw you into the deepest, darkest pitt of depression; AVOID them at all costs.
  • DO THINGS THAT KEEP YOUR MIND HAPPY: Whether that be watching tons of cheesy christmas movies, writing, reading, walking outside, whatever it may be do it. I’ve been spending a lot less time on my phone on social media apps. Once upon a time i’d sit and wrack my brains for hours trying to think of content to throw out there or reply to my family Whatsapp’s straight away and now I don’t because it became too consuming and made my mind an unhappy place to be.

This year, regardless of all the worries and stress that have been looming over my head, not just my own but the ones of other people as well I’ve managed to still not be a scrooge and ruin the magic for everyone else. There’s really nothing worse than people battering down other people’s Christmas spirit just because they’re struggling too. There’s so much negativity in the world right now that we should all grab on to the true nature of Christmas and cherish one another, have fun and spend quality time together.

AND REMEMBER, you don’t know everything everybody is going through and at this time of year, even though you should always be that little bit mindful about it, this time of year especially be extra mindful of the things you say to people.

  • Totally agree with all of this, I’d be happy to forget presents all together I believe presents are for kids anyway. And you know how much I’ve struggled and am still. Your an amazing writer on this blog but your kindness and empathy are what make you super special xx
